St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright says the current system of transfer windows is not beneficial to smaller clubs.
While he is happy with the deals he concluded during the summer window, he believes changes would allow more flexibility.
"If you look at it, the Bosman ruling was brought in for freedom of contract and now we have a restriction when players can move," Wright said.
"It means as well smaller clubs need to keep a bigger squad."
Wright revealed that his approach to bringing players in started long before the summer transfer window opened.
"We did a lot of our work in January," he explained.
"We re-signed a lot of our players, which we planned to do.
"And we got a lot of our work done early in terms of [signing] Brad McKay and John Sutton, which was done in June because again we were in Europe.
"If anything goes wrong with regards to injury you are restricted as to who you bring in."
St Johnstone have made a slow start to their league campaign with just one victory in their opening six matches and also suffered an early exit from the Europa League.
But Wright insists he is happy with the performances from his players so far this term.
"Europe was disappointing but in fairness to the players we were down seven players at one stage in that European tie [against Europa League opponents Aleshkert]," he added.
"Although it was disappointing I wouldn't be too hard on the players.
"The first batch of games I think the performances have been good for us. We scored goals, which a lot of people didn't think we would do. We have made uncharacteristic errors that have cost us games.
"I am looking for a better return now in the next batch of games. We have a lot of competition for places at the back, in midfield and up front."
